Thornleigh roofing, from Pennant Hills Road to the bush

Thornleigh runs from Pennant Hills Road across to the western edge of the suburb, where the land drops into the valley that Berowra Valley National Park occupies, between here, Hornsby Heights, Pennant Hills, Cherrybrook and Galston.

That east-west spread gives you two different roofing environments in one suburb. Near the main road and the station it is busy, built-up and mixed in age. Toward the western streets it is quiet, heavily treed, and the blocks start falling away.

Why the western side is harder on roofs

Everything that makes those streets pleasant is hard on a roof. Dense canopy means constant leaf fall and permanent shade, so roofs stay damp, moss takes hold on the southern planes and valleys dam up. Sloping blocks mean difficult access and more thought about where stormwater goes once it leaves the downpipe.

The practical answer is usually the same combination: clear and re-detail the valleys, replace the gutters that have rusted from the inside, and fit a fine-aperture guard that actually suits eucalypt litter rather than a coarse mesh that lets it straight through. Mixed housing, mixed roofs

Thornleigh has inter-war and post-war brick with tile, later brick veneer, townhouses, and commercial and light-industrial buildings along the main road corridor with large metal roofs and box gutters. We quote all of it, and the approach differs:

• Tile roofs from the 60s and 70s: restoration territory, unless the tiles themselves are failing.
• Older terracotta: careful repair, rebedding and matching rather than wholesale replacement.
• Large metal roofs: fastener and flashing condition first, then lap integrity, then the box gutters.
